my lab

Here are some details about my current homelab. This page is obviously subject to frequent changes.

There are 3 main machines composing my lab.

My router is an Asus AC-RT68U, with the latest Asuswrt-Merlin firmware.

1. UnRAID Server

This is a custom built tower. I built it in 2019, some parts were new, some came from my previous rig, some were just lying around :

  • Mobo : Gigabyte GA-B85-HD3
  • CPU : Intel i5-4590
  • RAM : 24Gb @ 1600Mhz
  • Drives :
    • 2 x 4tb WD RED HDD drives (parity + storage)
    • 1 x 1tb SATA SSD – Crucial MX500 (VMs)
    • 1 x 250Gb SATA SSD – Samsung 840 Evo (Cache drive)
  • PNY Nvidia GTX1070ti – GPU passthrough to gaming VMs
  • Case : Cooler Master HAF 912 Plus – large case, with 20cms fans, got it for free from a friend who was upgrading his gaming rig
  • 4Gb Sandisk USB drive (UnRAID system drive)

As for now, this server basically fulfills the following roles :

  • NAS Server : data storage for all my devices
  • My gaming rig through a Windows 10 VM (Steam Remote Play + Parsec)
  • My wife’s light and casual gaming VM (using Steam Remote Play + Parsec)

It does a great job as a NAS, UnRAID is an awesome OS. Regarding gaming, this platform is enough for both of us since we don’t play a lot of demanding games at the same time.

Streaming light games and retrogaming emulators works very well with this machine.

Stable and reliable gig, might be upgraded to a better Intel platform later, depending on the games we will to play.

Measured idle power consumption : ~55W

2. Proxmox Servers

My main hypervisor is now Proxmox, for all my general purposes VMs and LXC containers needs :

  • Mobo : Asus X470 Prime Pro
  • CPU : AMD Ryzen 7 2700
  • RAM : 64Gb @ 3000Mhz
  • 1 x 120gb SSD : Proxmox system drive
  • 1 x 1tb Kingston Nvme SSD
  • 1 x 250Gb 860 EVO Samsung SSD

It runs all my VMs + Docker containers, as well as a game server for friends. Tons of horsepower available, easy LXC management, reliable scheduled backups to my UnRAID NAS. Works like a charm.

Measured idle power consumption : ~45W

This setup is backed up with a secondary Proxmox servers, running on a Dell T1600. It is almost 10 years old now, I got it a few years back for really cheap. I upgraded it, so here are the specs :

  • CPU : i5-2500k
  • RAM : 20Gb DDR3
  • 1 x 120gb SSD : Proxmox system drive
  • 1 x 250Gb SSD : Samsung 860 Evo, VM Storage
  • 1 x 500gb 2,5″ HDD : backup for VMs

I upgraded the PSU to a Seasonic 350w one, to get more SATA power connectors. This machine has one of the lowest idle power consumption I’ve seen in a regular tower.

Measured idle power consumption : ~20W
